iPhone 18 Pro: Meet the New Pro

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max introduce Apple's most advanced iPhone camera system yet, with a new 48MP Fusion Main camera that brings variable aperture to iPhone for the first time.

Six laser-cut blades can smoothly adjust the aperture to control how much light reaches the sensor. The camera can automatically choose the right setting based on the lighting and depth of field, helping you capture sharper, more detailed photos in a wider range of situations. A new sensor also improves image quality, with better low-light shots and clearer detail further into the frame, useful when you're photographing a group or trying to capture more of the scene.

If you want more control, you can adjust the aperture manually in the Camera app, with four aperture settings to choose from. New Pro controls also give you more ways to customise your shots, including manual control over aperture, shutter speed and white balance, as well as a histogram for checking exposure.

The improvements aren't just about the hardware. A new computational imaging pipeline helps the Main camera produce sharper, more detailed images, while updated Photographic Styles add new texture and grain controls so you can fine-tune the look of your photos.

Video gets some useful additions too. Cinematic effects can now be applied after recording to videos shot at up to 60 fps, giving you more flexibility when editing. Time-lapse recording also supports 4K and Dolby Vision HDR, while updated Audio Mix algorithms improve voice quality and give you more control over music in your recordings.

For anyone who wants to go beyond simply pointing and shooting, iPhone 18 Pro puts considerably more creative control in your hands, while still making it easy to let the camera do the work when you want it to.

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max introduce Apple Reference Image, giving photographers and viewers a new way to check whether a photo has been edited.

The new 48MP Fusion Main camera can sign the data captured by its sensor, creating a digital record of what the camera actually saw. When Reference mode is used, that signed sensor data is processed by Private Cloud Compute to create an unalterable reference image.

You can then view the reference image alongside the original photo in the Photos app, much like a digital negative. Comparing the two makes it easier to see whether changes have been made to the original image.

Apple Reference Image is particularly useful for photographers and photojournalists who need greater confidence in the authenticity of an image, but it could also become a useful tool for anyone wanting to know whether a photo has been altered.

Apple is also adding support for image metadata and the SynthID standard, which can help identify images that have been generated or edited using AI. APIs in iOS, iPadOS and macOS 27 will allow third-party apps to support viewing Reference images too.

Together, these technologies give iPhone 18 Pro a broader approach to image authenticity, helping make it easier to understand where an image came from and whether it has been changed.

The Dynamic Island gets an upgrade on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with a redesigned display area that can show more information without getting in the way of what you're doing.

It can now display up to three Live Activities at once, making it easier to keep track of things happening in real time, whether that's a delivery, a journey or another ongoing activity.

The Dynamic Island continues to work with Face ID too, giving you a secure way to unlock your iPhone, authenticate purchases, sign in to apps and more.

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are powered by the new A20 Pro chip, built using advanced 2-nanometer process technology. With 50% more memory bandwidth than A19 Pro, it’s designed to handle everything from demanding games and advanced photography to the latest on-device AI features. The new 6-core CPU includes integrated Neural Accelerators, while the 7-core GPU delivers up to 40% faster graphics performance than A19 Pro. That means smoother performance when you're gaming, editing photos and video or using more demanding apps.

A20 Pro also features a new Dual 16-core Neural Engine, with 32 cores in total, twice the AI processing power of A19 Pro. This helps accelerate on-device AI models and computational photography, allowing more of the intelligent features on iPhone 18 Pro to run directly on the device. The result is a chip designed not just for the apps and games you use today, but for increasingly demanding AI and creative workloads in the years ahead.

Both models also feature Apple's new N1 wireless networking chip, bringing support for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. iPhone 18 Pro introduces C2, Apple's next-generation cellular modem system. It uses AI to improve cellular quality and reliability, while delivering faster uploads than C1X and using 15% less energy. C2 also adds mmWave support in the US.

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max bring a major improvement in battery life, combining new battery designs with the efficiency of Apple's latest silicon.

On eSIM-only models, iPhone 18 Pro offers up to 36 hours of video playback, while iPhone 18 Pro Max takes that to an impressive 45 hours. That means more time watching, browsing, gaming and staying connected between charges.

When you do need to top up, iPhone 18 Pro can reach up to 50% charge in around 15 minutes using a wired connection, or up to 50% in around 30 minutes when charging wirelessly.

iPhone 18 Pro Max is particularly useful when you're short on time. Just five minutes of wired charging can provide around seven hours of video playback, while a full charge delivers up to 30 hours of usage based on Apple's new battery usage model, which uses real-world data.

Whether you're heading away for the day or simply don't want to think about your charger, the improved battery life gives iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max more freedom to keep up with you.

Both models contain 40% recycled content overall, including 100% recycled cobalt in the battery and 85% recycled aluminium in the enclosure. Their manufacturing also uses 50% renewable energy across the supply chain, including energy from sources such as wind and solar.

Apple has also designed the iPhone 18 Pro models to meet its standards for energy efficiency and safer chemistry. The packaging is 100% fibre-based too, so it can be easily recycled at home.

These changes are part of Apple's ongoing efforts to use more recycled materials, renewable energy and recyclable packaging across its products.
